For me, mastering altered art has been, and I’m sure will continue to be, a bit like really really wanting to master a foreign language but just….not…..quite….getting it!
It seems that I try and I try and usually things don’t turn out as I had hoped.
I realize that it’s seeing things “outside of the box” as it were.
So….a new plan. I’ll begin gathering my elements all in one place.
I don’t really have many. Yet.
And see how I might best use them.
Vintage lace, a little drink umbrella, digital art.
Rusty metal and lace. You can’t beat that combination.
Words and numbers. Love ‘em!
More altered images.
My favorite saying. Love that font that I found in Photo Shop!
And one old faded framed print that I found at my mother’s.
And here you have it! I cut off the top of his crown in this pic. Darn it.
I still have to spray paint the frame cream (it’s presently an ugly brown) and distress it a little. But it’s raining like CRAZY here today so that will have to wait.
I think he turned out pretty cute for one of my first projects. It’s a learning experience. Much like decorating, I’m trying to remember to combine different shapes, sizes, elements, and textures, for the best look. It’s HARD! (insert whine here)
Speaking of different textures, I got the “wild hair” to shred some vintage paper yesterday. I found my oldest, rattiest, Readers Digest book and tore out about a third of it. WOW! I couldn’t believe how much shredded paper I ended up with! COOL!
I used it here.
And here.
And here.
And here. What a mega cheap great filler! You’d think I’d never heard of the idea before. :)

Friday was my Mother’s birthday. Our first without her. My amazingly sweet daughter brought ME a gift!
Isn’t she the cutest picture! I am totally embarrassed to say that I can’t remember the artists name. But not so embarrassed that I would get up off of my lazy rear-end, go downstairs, and look. Just be in’ honest here!
Heather said she didn’t see what the saying were until afterwards. How perfect could it have been?
“believe in healing”
I hung her in my entry on my pale lime green walls. Perfect!
Thank you soooooo much Heather! You’re the best daughter ever!
Have a wonderful week!
Denise
I love altered art also. I tried a few things and actually liked how they turned out. Unfortunately for me my family said I was really WEIRD which in turn, gave me a complex. haha! They are just no fun sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI like the shredded paper. Very cool, indeed!
I think you are doing a great job with the mixed media. Love what your daughter got you...that was so sweet!

Bonjour,
ReplyDeleteYou did such a good job on this, very impressive! How sweet of your daughter to remember your mother like this - what a treasure!
Godd week to you!
Denise, first I'm sorry to hear that you lost your dear mom. Heather's gift to you is really really sweet.
ReplyDeleteNow for your altered frame...Refuse to be average is also my motto. You are amazing. I've seen some pretty bad altered work out there, but you have made yours very inviting. Cool shredded paper girl!!
I tried my hand at one for my girlfriend in Vancouver. I altered a heart shaped valentine box. I had fun. I made it very hip, like high heels and cupcakes. I didn't want to part with it, but I had fun and she loved it.
I'm packing, leaving soon can't wait. There better be hot balmy days in Fla. for Julie and I.
Take care
Love Claudie

Denise, great work. I love the numbers and words too and as for your favorite quote. I think I saw it earlier on your blog and wrote it on a sticky note that is still stuck to the side of my monitor. Thanks for the motivation.
ReplyDeleteLook at all of your prett art, Denise!! You go girl! PRETTY painting from Heather! Isn't it by Kelly Rae? She does really cool work. Love the words too. Your daughter sure knows you and loves you. I know you are thinking about your Mama, and I know she is with you.

ReplyDeleteLOVE you sweet altered art! And the shredded paper is great. Who would of thought it would make such great Easter Grass. My Hubby swears one side of our house will crack off from the weight of all the books & magazines. Maybe I should start shredding! Have a great week. Charlene

Your art is absolutely lovely! I don't think there are any rules in altered art. Just do what feels right for you. Oh, and your daughter is a peach.....how thoughtful of her to give you a gift on your mother's birthday.
