For Our Pets

Gosh, it seems like I have heard of so many people that I know and in blogland who have lost their beloved pets this year.

Just today, I heard that a friend lost her beautiful German Shepherd and my sister in law lost her darling Jack Russell.   Earlier in the week, my brother lost his buddy, Bear.

In memory of Ace the German Shepherd , Gizmo the Jack Russell Terrier, and Bear, the best mutt ever!    And all of your beloved pets out there.

He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds;
my other ears that hear above the winds.
He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea.

He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason
for being by the way he rests against my leg;
by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile;
by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him.
(I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not
along to care for me.)

When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive.
When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile.
When I am happy, he is joy unbounded.

When I am a fool, he ignores it.
When I succeed, he brags.

Without him, I am only another man. With him, I am all-powerful.

He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion.

With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace.
He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant.

His head on my knee can heal my human hurts.
His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and
unknown things.

He has promised to wait for me...whenever...wherever--
in case I need him.
And I expect I will--as I always have.

A poem by Gene Hill………

And doesn’t this just express how we all feel about our “babies.”

  1. It is very sad to lose a pet. I still think of my first dog Toni, I had her from the time I was 2 until I was 17. Her picture sits in a little silver frame in my bedroom. And then there was Scooter, my wire haired fox terrier who was sent on an airplane to Dallas when I came to Kuwait. That was heartbreaking. But a very good friend who took him had just lost her cocker spaniel and Scooter wound up being with her for 12 years until he died at the age of 15. Our pets really do impact our lives.

    All your revamping is looking good. I so need to purge and organize and redo. My kids want a new look for their bedroom. It's rather hodgepodge right now. Everything around here is. :/

    Have a fabulous Friday! :) Tammy

  2. Oh, too sweet! We love our Siamese babies! My grandma just had to put her 17 year old kitty to sleep this week, devastating to her as she is already alone. Fabulous post, so touching.

  4. Such a beautiful tribute. We lost our beloved pug Emo early this Summer and still feel heartbroken. Many people don't understand, and I must admit as a young woman I was included in that group. Thank you for this lovely post that lifted my spirits today and reminded me of all the many wonderful moments we were so fortunate to share with Emo.

  5. What a lovely poem. My Newman has been not himself since he hurt himself some how last Saturday. It's a terrible reminder that I won't have him forever. He is he one to always kiss away my tears. The one that rests his head on my knee and stare up lovingly. He's not feeling good and I am getting a glimpse into what will be. I've had dogs die before mostly of old age. But it never gets easier. But this is a fitting tribute to our dearest companion. Thanks for sharing.

  6. thank you for posting this. I don't have a dog but just yesterday I was sitting with a good friend that had to put down her greyhound. I broke my heart to hear her story and I will be forwarding this on to her. Thanks so much,
    Pam
