The love of Vintage

I found another vintage hat today at the Rink.  Only $12.00!  I felt like I did well with this one.  Considering I seem to be too lazy to get out and look for them myself at estate sales.  This hat really reminds me of my Nanny.  It looks like something that she might have worn to church when I was a child. 

We know that she loved loved her hats!

 

I know that I have posted these pics. before.  I keep them out year-round.

I remember the “good old days” as a child.

I would go shopping with my grandparents in downtown OKC.  No malls back then!  You would go someplace fascinating for a young girl.  Someplace like John A.Browns department store.

The department stores were so elegant and beautiful.  They had everything from a wonderful hat department to wedding gowns and furs.  And of course, a wonderful luncheon counter or restaurant where we ate.

Downtown was a bustling and busy place.  I don’t remember the trolleys though.  Only stories that my mother used to tell me about taking the trolley downtown and spending the day.

So I fantasize that this hat was probably purchased someplace like this.

Such a pretty little hat with its chiffon flowers and brown velvet band.  I especially love the big cabbage rose.  The taupe color is so pretty.  I think it was probably added some time recently as it was pinned on with a safety pin.

Would this hat have been worn to an elegant luncheon?  I can’t really remember that much about ladies fashions.

Maybe it was a bit too dressy for a day of shopping and lunch?

A time before we had e-mail and the internet.  And a lady may have kept a book like this close at hand….

Maybe the fantasy, and the remembrance, if you are old enough to remember, is what attracts so many of us to all things vintage.  

What ever it is,  all things vintage have grabbed me by the hand and are leading me on a fine scavenger hunt.  What a fun adventure it is, too!

Fashion Trends!

Okay….I admit it.  I’m about as fashion forward as a Wal-Mart ad.  Or maybe I should be nice to myself and AT LEAST say a Target ad.  They do have cuter stuff, after all.  Anywho, it’s just not my thing.  But this year, yes this year, there’s a new trend that I can really get into.

SOCKS!!  Over the knee socks, knee socks, ankle socks.  Socks with everything.  I mean EVERYTHING.  And I don’t know about you, but I love wearing socks in the winter.  No cold tootsies, and, most importantly, no blisters!  So I’m all for this fashion trend.  It’s inexpensive AND as an added benefit, Heather absolutely HATES the way they look.  So I get to torment her along the way.  HAHAHA (insert evil laugh)

Now….if I could just find my “signature look.”

Yep, she’s all ready for an evening out!  Then I noticed she’s holding on to the door handle, probably so she doesn’t fall and break her neck.

 

Okay…..so this is a great one when you’re having a bad hair day.

Two words……..hunting season!  “Hey George, over here, I just bagged me a big plump one!”  Not good.

Hummmmm too “young”  sigh…..

Random Bits

Nothing much going on here this week.  Okay, except the heat!  It was so darn hot yesterday, I think all anyone wanted to do was sit in front of a fan.  I feel so sorry for anyone working outside in this.  The heat index yesterday was 108 degrees!  YUK!

So time for some indoor projects.

New posies going to the Rink.  Everyone of the last ones I took are gone.  Yippee!  These are fun to make and great therapy. :)  Bright colors for some of you girls.  These would be cute in a little (or big) girls room either pinned or glued on the front of an inexpensive pillow.

And if you prefer more neutral colors like me…..

I’ve got you covered there too!

Been trying to stock up on my laces and trims.  My stash was really getting low.  We can’t let that happen now, can we?!

I’ve been lucky the last week or so and really run across some nice ones.  All from the Rink, of course!

Which is also where I found this lovely!

Just love this sweet hat!  The really wonderful vintage ones with good millinery flowers are getting harder and harder to find.  Of course, now that I’ve decided I want a few. :)  If you collect hats, how much do you usually pay for them?  Just curious.   I’m paying between $15.00 to $18.00 here.

Also love this cute little number.

Don’t you love that hot hot pink!  It also has little velvet flowers scattered here and there underneath the netting on top.  Just precious.  To make it even more special, it belonged to my sweet sister-in-law who passed away several years ago. 

On to the master bedroom………

I finally found the perfect suitcases for the top of my armoire.  The striped in the middle was the last of the three.  I finally found it last week.  Don’t know if you can see it or not, but the top suitcase has a tiny metal airplane on the lid.  Love how they look.  Much neater and cleaner and the textures are great.

Once again, I must apologize for not knowing the source of these photos.  I have a whole file of pics. that I love and I must figure out a way (and take the extra time) to make note of the sources.

I’m guessing though, that they may have come from some of the Swedish or French blogs that I ADORE!

Bakelite

I dooo like me some Bakelite.  I wish I had some of the yummy vintage jewelry.

Cute stuff, huh? 

Maybe a vintage purse.

Now wouldn’t these make for a cute collection?

What I DO have, as pathetic as it may be, are a few kitchen utensils.  Most of them inherited from my grandmother and  mother.

I just pulled all of it out of my kitchen drawers and mixed it with some of my other utensils. 

Love the red handles on these two spoons.

Know what this is?  No…..it’s not a hair pick for that fancy 70’s hairdo that you thought you would love forever!:)     It’s a cake breaker.

I picked up these forks and knives in Colorado while we were on vacation.  I could have cleaned up in this antique booth.  She had more Bakelite kitchenware than I had ever seen.  If only hubby hadn’t been with me….sigh.  He just doesn’t get it…….  He couldn’t understand why I would want “that old stuff” and then INSISTED that it all had to “match”…….jez!

Love the way it looks with my milk glass.  Can’t WAIT to do a Christmas display!

Rewind…..

….to before vacation.  It always happens when you LEAST need to be spending money.  Finding something that you just HAVE to have.  Okay, okay…..not HAVE but WANT to have. 

“Don’t spend  any money!”  Hubby said.  “We’re saving for vacation.”  That means no magazines, new books, clothes, craft supplies.  For SURE don’t go anywhere near Target.  I’m such a spending addict.  It doesn’t have to be much, even new lipstick fills the void (temporarily.)

But….there she was………………….

In all of her vintage goodness.  Just teasing and beckoning.  I tried to resist.  Really I did!  Promise!  Pinky swear!  I walked by her several times.  Trying to talk myself out of buying her. 

Then I began imagining what she could look like.

Maybe a few of my fav. posies.

Some paper pretties.

A bit of vintage lace.

That did it.  I caved.

My new baby.  I love you sooo.

But you need a hat I think.

Sorry sweetie.  Give it up!

Come on Willow.  You’re never impressed with anything I do!  The least you could do is pose pretty like some of the other blog kitties.  Ungrateful little fur baby!
